     Elias Van Gorder was described as having blue eyes, light colored hair with a dark complexion and being 5ft. 7-1/2in tall.2 He was born circa 1827 at Candor, Tioga County, New York.1,2 He was the son of Solomon Van Gorder and Mariah Unknown.3 He married Margaret Unknown before 1853. He began military service on 8 February 1863 at Tioga County, New York, as a private in the 5th New York Cavalry.4,2 He ended military service on 19 July 1865 with his company at Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.4
