Charles Milliken1,2

M, b. circa 1725, d. after 12 May 1785
Charles Milliken is the founding father (in America) of this researcher's Milliken clan. Various spellings of his last name have been: Millakin, Milligan, Millicon and Millikin.
He was born circa 1725 at Connaught. His birthdate is an approximation. We do know that he came to America as part of the "Great Migration" of Scotch-Irish from the northern region of Ireland, many from the Ulster province. Charles was probably part of the third wave influx of settlers. He may originally have sailed into Philadelphia about 1744 and moved west to Lancaster County. He was the son of Unknown Milliken.2 On 4 June 1745, Charles purchased (by bond) land in Derry Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania from Patrick Hays. He probably met John Lewis shortly thereafter. John had left Ireland about 1729 and had led a great many of immigrants down into the Shenandoah Valley.

John Lewis, Benjamin Borden, Sr. and James Patton had received large grants of land, from Governor William Gooch, in the "Great Valley" region between the Blue Ridge, Shenandoah and Allegheny mountains. They were under instructions to fill the land with settlers.
He married Ann Harbison circa 1746 at Virginia. About 1747 Charles purchased 297 acres of land from Patrick Hay in Augusta County, Virginia. The land was located on the James River just east of Looney's (Luney) Mill Creek. In 1752 Charles bought 60 acres from Col. James Patton at the head of Looney's Creek. He was selected by the court to be a member of a work crew to built a road from his property to that of William Carravan's on 24 November 1753 at Augusta County, Virginia. Sometime around 1760 Charles moved south to Orange County, North Carolina. In 1761 he sold most or all of his land holdings in Virginia. He left a will on 12 May 1785 at Orange County, North Carolina; Last Will and Testament.3 He died after 12 May 1785 at Chatham County, North Carolina.
