     Evan Earl Boles was born in October 1885 at Indiana.¹ He was the son of Harmon W. Boles and Harriet Ellen Johnson.¹ He married Cassie Unknown circa 1909 at Indiana.⁴

     Evelyn Kay Boles was born on 28 August 1915 at Indiana.^1,2 She was the daughter of Charles Owen Boles and Clara Blanche Mason.¹ She married Allen Burnett on 30 June 1934 at Marion County, Indiana.^3,4 She died on 12 January 1997 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, at age 81.^1,2

     Farry Lee Boles is the daughter of Harry Otto Boles and Gertrude V. Bushnell.¹ She married Daniel Denton Dusing on 26 July 1963 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.^2,3

     Florence E. Boles was born circa January 1870 at Hancock County, Indiana.¹ She was the daughter of Harmon W. Boles and Harriet Ellen Johnson.¹ She married Charles Vernon before 1890.³ She died in 1925.⁴

     Forest J. Boles was born on 21 August 1884 at Indiana.¹ He was the son of William Abraham Boles. He married Audra B. Forster circa 1910 at Indiana.² He died in October 1966 at Urbana, Champaign, Ohio, at age 82.³

     Fred K. Boles was born in March 1881 at Indiana.¹ He was the son of Harmon W. Boles and Harriet Ellen Johnson.¹ He married Chloe M. Shaw on 8 September 1900 at Shelby County, Indiana.^4,3 He was employed by the Maxwell Motor Car factory in 1910 at New Castle, Henry County, Indiana.⁵ He died on 18 November 1912 at Fountaintown, Shelby County, Indiana, at age 31.⁶

     George D. Boles was born on 19 July 1898 at Greenfield, Hancock County, Indiana.^1,2 He was the son of Wesley W. Boles and Rachael Elizabeth Holden. He married Gladys Paul, daughter of Lewis Paul and Minnie Swoveland, on 25 May 1918 at Henry County, Indiana.² He died in June 1967 at Anderson, Madison County, Indiana, at age 68.³

     Goldie Mae Boles was born on 19 March 1896 at Hancock County, Indiana.^2,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Wesley W. Boles and Rachael Elizabeth Holden. She married Roscoe E. White, son of Ezra Eli White and Mary Elizabeth Minnick, on 18 March 1914 at Spencer, Owen County, Indiana.^6,7,5 She died on 6 September 1973 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, at age 77.¹

     Harmon S. Boles was employed by the Real Silk Hosiery Mills as a knitter.^3,2,4 He was born on 8 June 1901 at Fountaintown, Shelby County, Indiana.² He was the son of Fred K. Boles and Chloe M. Shaw.¹ He was a witness when Hattie Gillispie and Henry T. Boles were surprised by about 40 of their friends and family celebrating Hattie's 42nd birthday and their 26th wedding anniversary. on 25 April 1913 at Greenfield, Hancock County, Indiana.⁵ He married Carol F. Shank, daughter of William A. Shank and Cora Keaton, circa 1926.⁴ He died on 17 August 1955 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, at age 54.²

     Harmon W. Boles was described as

"A respected farmer and veteran of the greatest civil war know to history, the subject of thei sketch, although a plain man of the people, has acted well his part in life and exercised an influence for good among his neighbors and fellow citizens."
"Harmon W. Boles was born in Pendleton county, Kentucky, April 21, 1841, and spent his early life on a farm, attending, as opportunities permitted,
the district schools. When about eleven years of age he was brought to Shelby county by his parents, from which time until the breaking out of the great
rebellion, he devoted his attention to farm labor and grew up rugged and strong, well fitted to cope with the world and its many duties and responsibilities. When the safety of the government was threatened by the armed hosts of secession, he enlisted in Company G, Seventy-ninth Indiana Infantry, in
which he served until the close of the war, taking part in several campaigns, and not a few of the bloodiest battles of that great conliict, among which were
Stone River, Missionary Ridge and others, besides engagements of lesser note. On account of failing health he was obliged to leave his command prior to the movement against Atlanta, but when sufficiently recovered rejoined
the regiment at Nashville, Tennessee, and remained with the same until the
expiration of his period of enlistment. While in the service his eyes became affected, and he has never fully recovered from the ailment, nor regained his normal power of sight."
"Returning to Shelby county on quitting the army, Mr. Boles engaged in farming, which he still carries on and from that time to the present his interests have been identilied with Van Buren township, of which he is now an
honored citizen. He married in June, 1861, Harriett A. Johnson, who was born in this county February 5, 1840, and who proved a loving wife and tender mother until her death, which occurred on the 21st day of September, 1908. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Boles. of whom the following survive, namely: Harmon W., Jr., Henry T., Oliver P., Florence E., Dora, deceased: Fred and Earl."
"Mr. Boles was reared a Democrat, but becoming dissatisfied with the principles and tendencies of that party, especially the attitude of certain of its leaders towards the Union prior to the Civil war, he finally abandoned it and became a Republican. While firm in his convictions, well informed on the
leading questions at issue and zealous in maintaining the soundness of his opinions. he cannot be termed a politician, nor has he ever sought official
position. Fraternally he belongs to the Knights of Pythias lodge, at Fountaintown, and is also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, in which, from time to time, he has held positions of honor and trust."³


He was born on 21 April 1841 at Pendleton County, Kentucky.^1,3 He was the son of Abraham Boles and Lurana Moore.¹ He married Harriet Ellen Johnson on 5 June 1861 at Indiana.^4,3,5 He died on 2 October 1913 at Fountaintown, Shelby County, Indiana, at age 72.^6,5

Harmon W. Boles, Sr., seventy-two years old, one of the highly respected and esteemed residents of the county, a veteran of the civil wa, residing one mile west of Fountaintown, in Van Buren township, died very suddenly at the home of Mrs, Julia Martin, of Fountaintown, this morning at ten o'clock, from a sudden attack of the heart.
Mr. Boles had been in the best of health recently and was in exceptionally good spirits this morning. His granddaughter, Miss Martha Boles, who was visiting him, took sick earlier and about nine o'clock he called Dr. E. B. Miller, of Fountaintown. After the physician had administered the medicine, Mr. Boles told him that he believed he would ride back to Fountaintown with him, which permission was granted by Dr. Miller. He had been in Fountaintown but a short time when he went to the home of Mrs. Martin, a friend of the family. Just a few minutes before ten o'clock, he suffered an attack of the heart and fell over on the floor. Mrs. Martin immediately called Dr. Miller, whose office is just across the street, but by the time he arrived life was extinct.
Dr. M. M. Wells, county coronor, was called by Dr. Miller and he pronounced death due to an attacke of the heart.
Deceased had made this county his home the greater part of his life. He was one of the best known farmers of the county, but for the past several years had been living a retired life, he having accumulated enough by honest toil and square dealing with his fellowmen during his early days that he might live at leisure during his declining years.
Mr. Boles was a member of the Methodist Church and Knights of Pythias lodge at Fountaintown, and was a good christian man. He was loved by all his acquaintances fpr his many kind acts, which will always be remembered by his legions of friends. He was a veteran of the civil war and during his enlistment fought bravely and loyally for his country that the Union might not be destroyed. During the trying conflict he was wounded and until his death he had been greatly bothered with his eyes, which were injured in the war. In the movement that was for the betterment of the community in which he resided, deceased could always be depended upon to lend a helping hand. The news of his death will bring sadness to may homes.
Mr. Boles' wife preceded him to the great beyond several years ago and since that time his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Chloe Boles, had been taking care of his home.
The surviving relatives are four sons----Harmon, Jr., and Dr. Earl, residing in the northern part of the state; Berry, of VanBuren township, and Henry, of Greenfield, and one daughter, Mrs. Charles Vernon, of near Gwynneviller. The children will have the heartfelt sympathy of the county in the great bereavement.
The funeral arrangements had not been made at time for press and will be announced later.⁷



The subject of this sketch was the son of Abram and Louisa Moore Boles. He was born in Pendleton County, Kentucky, on April 21, 1841, and died at his late home, near Fountaintown, October 2, 1913, aged 72 years and 5 months. He came to Shelby county when he was about 11 years of age.
He was married June 5, 1861, To Harriett Ellen Johnson, who died September 2, 1908. To this union were born eleven children, six of whom preceded the father to the unseen world. The surviving childrenare: Harmon W., Jr., of Summitville; Henry T., of Greenfield; Oliver Perry, of Shelby county, and Evan Earl, of Fowler, the sons, and one daughter, Florence, the wife of Charles Vernon, of Hancock county. Also Mrs Chloe M. Boles, the daughter-in-law, who has been living with Mr. Boles, keeping house for him for some time. Besides these he leaves his aged mother, who is now 89 years old; one sister, Martha Hutton, and three brothers - Wesley, William and Al Boles; twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends who mourn his departure.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge at Fountaintown. In 1862 he enlisted in Company G, 79th Indiana Infantry, in which he served until the close of the war. Col Fred Kueffler was the commander of his regiment , and among the battles in which he was engaged were those of Stone Mountain and Missionary Ridge. He has been a loyal member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and held all his comrades in the highest esteem. Taps have sounded and one more comrade has answered the last roll call. dw-pd.⁵
