He had several brushes with the law prior to his death. The Midland Reporter-Telegram published the following:

4 Nov 2004

An investigation revealed four inmates attempted to escape from the roof of the Midland County Central Detention Center by making a hole in the ceiling.
The Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday a large hole was located late Sunday in the ceiling of the B Block. The hole was detected by a guard.
Phillip Jay Sterling, 25, Craig Allen Niedecken, 19, James Richard Cunningham, 31, and Darrin Dwayne Clemons, 35, were each charged with escape from a correctional facility.
Sheriff Gary Painter said citizens have nothing to fear and measures are being taken to ensure it doesn't happen again. He declined to elaborate.
Cunningham was arrested in September for aggravated sexual assault of a Midland woman at her home. His other charges include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading and resisting arrest, forgery and theft.
Sterling is being held on charges that include burglary of a habitation and criminal non support. Niedecken is being held on violation of probation for robbery and a misdemeanor charge of failing to stop and give information.
Clemons is being held on out-of-county charges of burglary of a habitation, robbery and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

16 Feb 2017 (the day Craig died)

A 26-year-old Midland man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred earlier in the day.
Christopher Evans was charged with murder in connection with the death of Craig Niedecken, 32, according to a press release from the city.
Midland Police and Fire department personnel responded to a call at about 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kent Kwik at the intersection of Wadley Avenue and Loop 250. They found Niedecken with a single stab wound.
He had been driven to the store by an acquaintance who was nearby when the stabbing occurred in the 4700 block of Boulder, according to the release.
Niedecken was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after.
The investigation revealed that Niedecken and Evans knew each other and were engaged in a verbal dispute in a parking lot before the stabbing occurred. Evans turned himself over to police during the investigation.
