Deceased was born in Schroon and in the prime of vigorous manhood he enlisted as a member of Company H of the 5th New York Cavalry which was commanded by General John H. Taken prisoner by the Confederates, he was confined in Andersonville prison. When placed in Andersonville he weighed 196 pounds and after a few months there his daily ration of a pint of corn meal and 3 table spoonfuls of molasses had caused his weight to fall to 96 pounds.

R., became a member of it, continuing as such until the organization disbanded a few years ago. He served as the fire warden and assessor for a number of years.
