Rites set for art teacher Xian Akagi
Services for Xian Hanalora Akagi, a longtime Dallas school district art teacher, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Restland Memorial Chapel in Dallas.
Ms. Akagi, 57, died of lung cancer Thursday at her sister's home in Dallas.
Born in Sheldon near Houston, Ms. Akagi graduated in 1960 from Southern Methodist University with an art education degree. She taught art in Dallas elementary schools, known to her students as Mrs. Duff and Mrs. Camacho, her names from two marriages. She later returned to her maiden name, Akagi, as an art teacher at Madison High School, where she taught for the past seven years.
Her lung cancer was diagnosed in September, said her daughter, Kathleen Duff of Dallas.
"The doctor told her she had two months to live if she didn't have therapy, but that if she did take chemotherapy and she responded well, the average was nine months," Ms. Duff said. "We thought we had her until this summer."
Her mother "fought like hell," but it just got to her, Ms. Duff said. "We used to laugh and say, `Mom had cancer, but cancer didn't have her.' "
In addition to teaching at the high school, Ms. Akagi taught art to students enrolled in the Upward Bound summer program at Southern Methodist University.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, she was a member of the Panel of American Women, a group that visited numerous Texas schools and civic centers to discuss prejudice and how to beat it.
Ms. Akagi also is survived by her mother, Beatrice Akagi of Dallas; two sisters, Betty Coker of Dallas and Bessie Davis of Houston; two brothers, Henry Akagi of Rusk and Joe Akagi of Milton, Fla.
Memorials may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, the AIDS Resource Center or the American Cancer Society.2
