Captain James Herndon1

     The following information is posted on Find-A-Grave:

During the American Revolution, James Herndon commanded a company of Chatham County North Carolina Militia which in 1779 marched to Camden Courthouse and Charlestown, SC. The regimental commander was Colonel Lytle, whose regiment was a part of the army of General Benjamin Lincoln. References are found of James Herndon, as a captain, and as commander of a fort. He was one of the prisoners captured by David Fanning in his attack on Pittsboro, who reported to Governor Burke, 22 July 1781 from the camp at McFall's Mill, Raft Swamp, concerning their capture.
Married to Isabella Thompson.2 Captain James Herndon was born circa 1738 at Caroline County, Virginia.1 He was the son of William Herndon and Sarah Poe.3,4 He married Isabella Thompson circa 1761 at Caroline County, Virginia.1 He died on 15 January 1850 at Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky.1,2

     William Herndon was the great, great, great grandfather of Mary West who married William Milliken in 1808. The Herndon family and descendants are numerous and there are other sources available for further research. The members who are listed are just as much part of our family tumbleweed as any direct ancestors of this researcher. The following note is listed on the Find-A-Grave website concerning William Herndon:

William Herndon is believed to have come to Virginia from County Kent before 1664. He is allegedly the first Herndon in America with an authenticated record. He married Catherine in 1677 and died 1722 in Saint Stevens Parish. They had at least three children.1 He was born in 1649 at Tenterden, County Kent.1 He married Catherine Digges before 1678 at Virginia.1 He died in 1722 at King and Queen County, Virginia.1
