Humble Fire Chief Max Cullum Sr., admired as an administrator who remained in touch with the firefighters working under him, died of cancer Saturday at Northeast Medical Center. He was 66.

He began in the department as a volunteer firefighter and rose to become a chief with a common man's touch.

"He never forgot where he came from," said fire Capt. Eugene Niemeyer. "He'd listen to your side of the story before making a decision on anything."

Cullum was a member of the department for more than 30 years. He was appointed interim chief in 1992 and made acting chief in 1993.

Born in Houston, he attended schools in Humble and graduated from Humble High.

As chief, Cullum was not a distant administrator but knew how important it was for firefighters to have quality equipment, Niemeyer said.

Buddy Rice, an Humble firefighter for five years before becoming an investigator for the Harris County fire marshal, said Cullum did not lose his personal touch when he became chief.

"He was a good man -- not only as a boss, but as a person," Rice said. "He was just good people."

Although he wasn't a skilled golfer, he played in local tournaments to raise money for youth athletic leagues or charities, and he took part in charity cookoffs, Rice said.

Cullum attended First United Methodist Church in Humble.
