December 18, 2001

Saul Weber, a lifelong resident of the Hartford area, died Sunday, (December 16, 2001) of complications following hip surgery. Born in 1915, he devoted his professional life to Fox Press, the printing firm famously purchased for $10 during the Depression, by his father-in-law, Nathan Fox. Under Weber's leadership, the firm grew out of its location at 206 State Street and pioneered the development of the North Meadows area, where, in a modern plant, it led the field in high quality four-color-process printing. His fine eye was reflected in Grafik, an occasional in-house magazine, and holiday cards for which he purchased original art by Ludwig Bemelmans, I. Rice Pereira, and Irving Katzenstein, among others. Weber was a passionate humanist whose interests included Esperanto, the United Nations, and race relations. Although he rebuffed an effort by Henry Wallace supporters to draft him for a Congressional run in the Forties, he never lost his interest in politics. He hit the longest home run to date in the history of Weaver High School, from which he graduated; excelled at racquet sports and golf: and pursued fly fishing in Ireland and trap shooting locally. He was a supporter of the basketball team at UConn, which he attended for two years. His marriage to the painter Caroline Fox Weber ended with her death in 1990. He leaves a son and a daughter of that marriage and their families, Nicholas Fox Weber and Katharine Weber of Bethany and Paris; and their daughters, Charlotte Fox Weber and Lucy Swift Weber and Nancy Weber and Robert Cahn of New York City, NY and Putnam County, NY; and children, Albert Fox Cahn and Rose Weber Platt. He leaves Ziona Goldstein Kaplan-Weber of West Hartford, his wife since 1996. Burial will be private. Donations may be made to the Saul and Caroline Fox Weber Scholarship Fund, c/o the Hartford Art School Endowment, 200 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford, CT 06117. Weinstein Mortuary is entrusted with arrangements.2
