James Monroe DeLong1

     James Monroe DeLong was born on 14 August 1866 at Deadwater, Essex County, New York.1 He was the son of John Lindsey DeLong and Celestia L. Jordan.1 He appeared on the census of 2 August 1870 in the household of John Lindsey DeLong and Celestia L. DeLong at North Hudson, Essex County, New York.2 He appeared on the census of 2 June 1875 in the household of John Lindsey DeLong and Celestia L. DeLong at North Hudson, Essex County, New York.3 He married Eleanor Broughton on 1 March 1904 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New York.1 He died on 6 October 1961 at Essex County, New York, at age 95.1 He was buried on 9 October 1961 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New York.1 JAMES MONROE DELONG
Elizabethtown lost another of its older citizens in the death of James M. DeLong in the 96th year of his age, on Oct. 6th, in the Saranac General Hospital after a long illness.
James Monroe DeLong, son of John Lindsey and Celestia Jordan DeLong was born on August 14th, 1866 at Deadwater, North Hudson Essex County, New York, the youngest of five children. His father John DeLong was descended from the Huguenots who came from Scotland to our country in the early days. He owned a large tract of timber land in North Hudson where he owned and operated two saw mills and a store. Disastrous fires and floods ruined him so in 1877 he moved to Elizabethtown, New York.
There is 1884 James graduated from High School and then entered Union College in Schenectady where he was active in Athletics and popular among the student body. He was captain of the football team. a member of the Phi Delta Theta and president of his class. In 1888 he was graduated with two degrees, AB and CE.
That same year he started west eventually settling in California in 1890. There he practiced engineering and taught school until 1896 when he returned to Elizabethtown to care for his ailing parents. There he opened an Engineering and Insurance office and there he stayed for the remainder of his life.
On March 1st, 1904, he and Eleanor Broughton of Moriah, N.Y., were married.
Mr. DeLong was an Episcopalian, a life long Republican and led an active community life having held at various times such public offices as town supervisor, town assesor and president of the School board. He served as the warden of the Church of the Good Shepherd, was a member of the Adirondack Lodge No. 602, F. and A. M. for sixty-five years, being at the time of his death the oldest member of that lodge. He was also a Royal Arch Chapter member - An ardent golfer, he was a member of the "Hole In One" Club.
Mr. DeLong retired from active insurance work February 1st, 1953.
Possessed of an amiable disposition and an innate desire to be of help to others he numbered his friends as "legion." His sterling character and many acts of kindness will perpetuate his memory in the minds of all who knew him.
Mr. DeLong is survived by his widow.
Masonic services were held at the Marvin Funeral Home Sunday evening at eight o'clock by Adirondack Lodge No. 602.
Funeral service were held in the Funeral Home Monday at 2:00 p. m., with the Rev. Donald McDougle officiating. The bearers were Howard Richards, Marshal Blanchard, Joseph Sunn, Logan Phinney, Harlan Carson and John Deming. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.1

DeLong at North Hudson, Essex County, New York.3 She appeared on the census of 2 June 1875 in the household of John Lindsey DeLong and Celestia L. DeLong at North Hudson, Essex County, New York.4 She married Elias H. Raycraft on 31 December 1879 at Stanton, Montcalm County, Michigan.2 She and Elias H. Raycraft appeared on the census of 16 June 1900 at Arcada Township, Gratiot County, Michigan.5 She died circa 1938 at Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan.6 She was was mentioned in a newspaper article.
"We were inexpressibly grieved to hear of the death of a life long friend. Mrs. Lillian Raycraft of Alma, Mich. Mrs, Raycraft, whose maiden name was Lillian Delong, together with her sister Emogene went west many years ago to teach school. Emogene married and settled in San Jose, Calif., while Lillian married the late Ely Raycraft of Alma, Mich. After the death of her husband, her youngest son John took over home and cared for the mother in her declining years. Whenever Mrs. Raycraft came east she loved to visit old-time friends and the scenes of her childhood. After old age and ill health prevented so long a journey she often, when writing friends, expressed the wish that she could once more visit the old home town. Another Christian lady at rest with the God whom she served long and well." on 10 February 1938 at Au Sable Forks, Clinton County, New York.6
